Upper Taughannock Falls

Description

Located within Taughannock Falls State Park, there is a second waterfall that can be accessed from an abandoned railroad bridge spanning the gorge above the main Taughannock Falls. This vantage point offers stunning views of the gorge, the main falls upstream, and Cayuga Lake in the distance. When the water level in Taughannock Creek is high, the cascading water passing under the bridge creates an impressive sight.

The area around the bridge was once home to a train station named "Taughannock Falls" on the old Lehigh Valley Railroad schedules. The bridge was crossed by a train called the Black Diamond Express, which operated between New York City and Buffalo. Passengers on the train would stop on the bridge to admire the gorge and upper falls, enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

To witness the waterfalls at their best, it is recommended to visit during the late winter snow melt or a day or two after heavy rain in the spring or fall. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear for walking on forest trails.

To see the upper waterfall, visitors can proceed up the hill from the overlook, reach the end of Taughannock Park Road, and turn left onto Jacksonville Road, crossing the bridge. There is a small gravel parking area on the left immediately after crossing the bridge. From there, a short path through the woods leads to the paved pedestrian walkway on the railroad trestle.

Exploring Taughannock Falls State Park, witnessing the breathtaking waterfalls, and enjoying the other surrounding places promises to be a memorable experience.
